Here at The Rationale Quest, we will have a new series about the history
of heresy in the Christian religion. First, we emphasize a need for a
very important clarification of the term heresy before we begin. We previously covered parts of it in our articles about liberalism. Before we start, we feel a need to define the term heresy. ( We respect the priority of conscience as we explore the history of all these heresies. For this reason, we will leave out the term heretic.) The strict meaning of heresy is a deliberate rejection of some doctrine of which is an obligation of faith. In a
broader sense it takes in all denials of truth, whether binding of
faith or not. Hilaire Belloc defines heresy in this broader sense when
he says heresy is then a ring of exception of that complete scheme - with his thoughts about the Christian religions. In this sense it is a denial of one or
other elements of Christian Religion even though such and element is not
defined as dogma. The dictionary defines heresy as any opinion in philosophy
, politics etc opposed to official or established views or doctrines.

Both of the meanings of the word, heresy are theological, but the use of
the word has carried over into philosophy. In philosophy, there are
human minds will to accept certain systems but with reservations. In
this sense, the word heresy does not always mean the same as false
doctrine. I is just a rejection of some essential part of a
philosophical system. ****For example, St. Thomas Aquinas and Plato would be at odds concerning parts of each system but may agree with other parts.

Thus for the sake of discussion in our exploring heresy, we have then,
three large meanings of the word heresy: the strict theological sense,
the broad theological sense and the philosophical sense. All three
meanings will be used in our coming articles. We will explore not only
heresy but will get into "modern" heresy too. Modern heresy can mean a
heresy that is adopted in a contemporary way for the first time, or it
can mean a heresy out of the past as it affects the present day. It is
still possible to invent new errors but most of present day heresies
come from the past. We will explore these heresies as a prevalent error
today be it of a present day condition or whether it blends with errors
of the past.

The prime object of our exploration wil be heresy in a theological
sense but error in multiply and there is really no "degrees" of truth.
Truth alone is one. A statement is either true or not true. It is
impossible for the mind sto tolerate error but it is possible to
tolerate a wrong man. In this exploration of heresies, a man in error
will be tolerated as long as he does not interfere with the common good.
Obviously between the mind of man and the word of God there is little
choice.

In our next post we will set the stage for our journey maintaining the
position and power of the human intellect. The human intellect is made
for truth and of itself it is incapable of error. Later, we will cover
the many heresies throughout history and how they affect us today.
