We started our advocacy for human dignity in the workday in 1992 and have been online since 1998- ( search under tapsearcher or tapsearch com for thousands of resources. ) and noted that only value added economies work in the most possible local setting. Also, the process of balancing out geopolitical problems are more successful the same way. Pope Benedict stresses the prinicple of subsidiarity which means all decisions should be made at the lowest level possible.
Globalization and free trade do not work this way and ultimately when production is divorced from investment, only havoc follows. Now our economies based on making money on money instead of making things are burning out. A working poor class and underclass can no longer support the global economy and support their own government services.
Finally, local governments and agencies are promoting shopping locally. This is a good trend but not enough since the money spent at the retail level quickly fans out to where the products are made and where the investments reside. Too much of this is happening outside of individual countries and communities.
However, in shopping local, value is added locally in tune with how much flows locally from the raw product to the end user or retail level. The value added stages could be anywhere from one to about seven levels depending on the distribution and added production levels.
Amiba.Net fostered local economies Ambia Net says "Multiple studies have shown each dollar spent at local independent businesses, on average, generates at least three times more direct local economic benefit that dollars spent at an absentee-owned-chain."
Many say it is only human nature to shop for the cheapest price and overall value without considering the harm involved to local communities and workers.

I set up three assembly lines for home oil furnaces and when orders slowed down, the workers were taken off the assembly line and helped make the the parts. The inventory was on hand at all times with the value of the inventory growing in a timely fashion in the process. Now we have big box stores pushing energy saving light bulbs. We call them the 8000 mile light bulbs since they use up that much energy getting to market from dirty factories in China. This comes after thousands of workers lost their jobs in the lighting industry in the USA. See :
