Top Journalist has Hot recovering tip: Buy morality

In our last post, we made an important distinction about individual freedom with the priority being a person or personality with the power of reason to seek truth and ultimately perfect love. We presented this as a response to Kevin Obrien's article titled Hot recovery tip: Buy morality. Obrien is a top journalist with the Cleveland Plain Dealer and he cites the coming encylical by Pope Benedict about the errors that have led the world to the current economic crisis. He doubts if government is the answer.

We already have Pope Leo's Rerum Novarum enclylical from 1891 that stood the test of time for more than eighty years. It was used as a standard which primarily evolved into the right of workers to form unions. It has alot more in it about the rights of employers and workers but the right to unions took precedence in practice. It also stressed the individual right to property. Unfortunately, good men like President Ronald Reagan reversed its influence in our times. Lech Walesa, the leader of the Solidarity movement in Poland which played a major part in the fall of Communism, ( perhaps even more than Reagan ) made a strong stand for the right of workers in accordance to Rerum Novaru and Pope John Paul confirmed the Solidarity movement. So Pope Benedict will most likely just confirmed what is already on the books.

We also have fair trade laws on the books flowing from the natural law and common law but these laws have not been enforced in our times. Kevin Obrien, says no one with an lick of sense, is for unbridled capitalism but he questions who should put a harness on the system. He says government is a poor choice. However, we have had all of the above available and have failed to use it. In fact, Conservatives who lead the way in other moral matters, failed when it came to human dignity in the workday. The Liberal Left does not even understand these conditions since individual freedoms rule the game. They do not know how to make the distinction between individual freedoms and a person's power of reasoning to sort out these freedoms. Many of these freedoms are not free and do more harm than good.

In the end we have a consumer population who buy products without considering the conditions behind the price. We have sports fans who ignore the top stars who promote the NIKE label which actually stands for all the wage slave labor being used to produce our goods.

I also wonder about Liberatarians, who are completely set in their ways with their connotation of liberty. I assume this means individual freedoms are a priority in doing business without any controls. Human nature is flawed and needs reasoning to sort out the bad parts when individaul freedoms wander all over the place. The will (or choice) is dependent of the intellect to be properly informed.

Kevin Obrien also mentions Pope Benedict may discern about utopian experiments. However, I assume Pope Benedict will refer to experiments like Communism instead of other commnunal work community efforts throughout history. The biblical passages about communities sharing all things in common have haunted us for ages. Rerum Novarum maintained the right to individual property, but this right could be considered community property too if a group of persons agree to do it this way. However, most of the communities that agree to share all things in common have only worked in monasteries and convents. There have been many attempts to integrate the monastery life to the active life on the outside and there will be many more.

Alan Greenspan surprisely devotes a good part of his book to degrading this approach. In his book The Age of Turbulence, he dwells on the New Harmony work community experience in the last century as a failure and seems to use it in defense of his Free Market concepts. I was surprised that he spent so much time on this small happening in history to defend a massive idealogy of Globalist Free Traders.

He ignored the history of the Lend Lease Act and The Marshall Plan that would have been great examples of how government can do some things right or practical. After the economic crisis came, Alan Greenspan told Congress he was surprised that the investment and financial communities did not police themselves. This actually says it all in terms of individual freedoms ignoring the distinction of human beings needing reasoning to sort out the bad from the good. It tells us how individual freedom is not enough to get things right. Nothing happens by itself. Unfortunately, too many people of good will, let things get out of hand. Raw Capitalism is the end result.

We do not need big government to sort out what is bad and what is good since they are part of the problem and not the solution. However, we have had many protective devices as noted above but have failed to use them. We let illogical patterns take over. For example, the U.S. Federal Government sponsored the moving of factories outside the U.S. starting in 1956. It was supposed to be a temporary program but it never ended. It evolved into so call Free Trade. It made production and factories portable, ready to be moved from place to place for the sake of cheaper labor. This made workers the real commodities being traded not goods. How can anyone call this trade. This is the first question that should be answered before trying any new government gimmicks.

This is what we have now: We have the Rush Limbaughs and the Clintons of the world walking down the path of illogical Free Trade and Globalism.

Lech Walesa says: I do not know that much about business or economics, but I do know that something is very wrong when ten percent of the population controls 100 percent of the wealth.

President Franklin Roosevelt said: Economic diseases are highly communicable.

President Teddy Roosevelt said: My worst fear for American is when big goverment and big business become one.
