Hmmm...

From the Washington Post:

"'We have one of the highest homicide rates in the country but at the same time have the strictest [gun] law,' [DC mayor] Fenty said, joining other urban chief executives at the bipartisan summit on the issue yesterday on Capitol Hill."

So naturally, you need federal government intervention to stop trafficking! You see, those lax-gun-law redneck areas -- with far lower crime rates than your city has -- are screwing it all up.

Just ran across this, and thought I'd toss in a few points as a DC native. First, DC's crime rate has historically been high not because of violence against the unarmed masses, but because of gang wars betweeen armed groups. Secondly, a lot of that violence happens on the border between Southeast DC and Maryland, where gangs are ducking back and forth across the border to avoid capture. Thirdly, DC's crime rate gets compared to states generally, which is not fair, since most large cities would lose to most states on that front. However, finally, violent crime in DC's suburbs also appears to be on the rise, also driven by gang violence. I'd be curious to know how you interpret these numbers, that mainly get lost in the entire state profile of VA or MD.
