By Ray Tapajna continuing the series about Free Trade trashing human dignity in the work day
Another example of labor and workers being the stepchildren of philosophy and religion - in the cruel unknowing dysfunctional global economic arena.
( This example could be in 2008 but it is from the archives of our news sources - we will provide the year at the end of this post )
Recently a church bulletin read - Success is reaching Social Security Age before having to declare bankuptcy - this is the sign of our times.
Older Workers are disappearing from the work-force. Older men have been vanishing from the work-forces and older women have been joining it - at almost precisely the same rate. For men, it's a combination of early retirement, downsizing and other economic factors. For women, it is mainly the result of women who entered the work force in the 1960s and 1970s are showing up in the 55 and older category. However, many women who were at home raising a family are also going to work to replace the loss of their husband income.
Reportedly, one third of all men over 55 who lose their jobs never find another one. It is impossible to say how many older men are leaving work voluntarily or involuntarily. However we have witnessed more than a thousand customers closing down in our business alone. We also have witnessed the closing of more than a thousand system houses and small computer businesses in just a tri-state area. We talked to many as they tried to survive with many tyring many different things but in the end, they seem to vanish away and are missing in action from any kind of real reporting.
The disappearence fo older men from the American work-force is a long-standing trend other than a recent casualty of downsizing. They have been vanishing at about half a percentage point a year since 1949. By 1994, just 64.8 percent of men 55 to 64 were in the labor force. The rest weren't bothering to look for work or had given up hope. If a company offers a buyout and you think you might be laid off anyway in six months, are you leaving voluntaarily and how many are being forced out.
The yearly lost contribution to the U.S. economy of ilded workers age 55 and older is equivalent to 2.6 percent of the gross national product.
Wives' paychecks and higher home values ease the eocnomic pressure on older men but in recent years, bankruptcy among the elderly is breaking all records.
Corporate America has lost its soul to an extent being primarily concerned with efficiency and competitiveness and the way their stock values are judged. In the past, stock values increased when a company demonstrated that they could employ many people while still showing a profit. In recent years, stock values rose as workers are fired instead of hired.
The real world from the streets of USA shows that instead of socking away money for retirement, many men can expect to find themselves jobless a decade away from thier first Social Security check and take note that a man at 55 is in the middle of the marriages of his children or having children in college. All too quickly they are taken by surprise in the lost of their power to provide for their family.
( What year was this source of information provided - It could be any year in the the 2000s as many workers fade away into oblivion - In this case it was recorded in September 1995 )
Philosophy and Religion are essentially blind to this degradation of human dignity in the work day. Even Adam Smith held labor as something sacred and the core of society. Today even those nearing 40 are at risk just because they are reaching the age of anti-age discrimination regulations. It is a cruel unknowing global economic arena, we live in.
