Based on the Imitation of Christ (500 year old book) and Chapter 3 in today's world From THE FIRST BOOK - Admonitions ( mild warnings to correct some fault) useful for the spiritual life
Doctrine of Truth
Our own opinion and sense deceive us and we need the gift of discernment in all matters large and small.
"Eyes have they, but they see not" ( Ps. 115:5 and Mark 8:18 )
He who hears eternal Words is set free from opinions. Without it, no one can understand and judge things the right way. We become weary in reading and hearing so many things and need the eternal Word to properly focus on our priorities. The more a person is at one within themselves, the more and higher things can be understood without labor for they receive the light of understanding from above ( Luke 10:21 ). A pure , sincere, and stable spirit is not distracted in a multitude of affairs. for it works all to the honor of God and inwardly strives to be at rest from all self-seeking.
The good and devout prepare for their work in this world. Who has a harder struggle than those who labors to conquer themselves. All perfection in this life has some imperfection bound with it and no knowlege is without some darkness. A humble knowlege of self is a surer way to God than a deep search after learning. Learning and knowlege is good but a good conscience and virtuous life are always to be preferred first. Rooting out evil is better than proposing questions. If this was our priority, there would be less evils and slanders in the world.
We all must face our day of judgment. We shall not be examined as to what we havae read, but what we have done. (Matt. 25 ) And because many rather choose to be great rather than humble, they come to naught in their imaginations ( Rom. 1:21 )
He is truly great, who is great in love. The truly wise are those who do the will of God and forsakes thier own will.
