500 year old book still applys - THE IMITATION OF CHRIST by Thomas A Kempis From The First BOOK - Admoniitons ( a mild warning to correct some fault ) useful for a spiritual life
Here are some daily thoughts from The Imitation of Christ.
The Imitation of Christ was compiled 500 years ago and is the most widely read book of Christian devotions. It can inspire you at the beginning of your spirtiual life and hold it steady at the end. The first chapter highlights the main block to pursuing perfection. It quotes ( Eccles. 1:2 ) "Vanity of vanities.... and all is vanity" This relates to the invidual in their workday and even for those who are in a monastery. The ego trys to control all even in spiritual pursuits. St John of the Cross takes it on directly in his quest for the Perfect Love of God. However, the common man can do it in his everyday life through The Imitation of Christ. The words may sound outside of our modern day but they really are not. You do not need to chew on the text, you can also just use the words as prayers everyday. Most likely, you will be surprised what unfolds in you each day and how you put the words into action without even being aware of it. You will not lose your free will.
The Imitation of Christ quotes ( Eccles. 1:8) in reference to this: " The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing", We usually want it all and afraid to even challenge ourselves in this matter as being too weak to handle a confrontation with our ego.
A Kempis says ( Rev. 2:17 ) - but many who often hear the Gospel of Christ have little desire for it, because they do not "have the Spirit of Christ" (Rom. 8:9 ). There are many ways to invite the Holy Spirit into your life and one way is to put human thinking aside for awhile an pray in the text of The Imitation of Christ.
Profound thinking and words do not make us holy alone and as The Imitation of Christ tells us : I would rather feel contrition than know its definition. If you knew the whole Bible by heart and the sayings of all the philosophers, what would profit you without love (1 Cor. 13.2 )
It is vanity to wish for a long life and be careless in living it.
The Holy Spirit is in waiting. The Holy Spirit empowers you to love the Holy of Holies who gave His life for you. He can get you past all vanities too. Call on Him to come now or click on Knock Knock , Who is There and see what happens.
